Eunice N. Sato
Eunice Noda Sato, who served as the first female mayor and first Asian American mayor of Long Beach from 1980 to 1982, died at her home in Long Beach Friday. She was 99. In 2015, Sato was honored by the naming of a new high school in East Long Beach, when Hill Middle School became Sato Academy of Math and Science.
In remembrance of Eunice N. Sato’s life, the family requests those who wish to consider making a charitable donation to Sato Academy of Math & Science High School in Long Beach, CA.
Donations made in lieu of flowers will honor the annual Eunice N. Sato Perseverance Award and the advancement of Sato Academy’s rigorous Engineering and Biomedical Science STEM pathways.
The Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science officially dedicated its campus in honor of school namesake and former Long Beach Mayor Eunice N. Sato in the fall of 2016.
While Eunice was not able to attend the ceremony, her son, Douglas Sato, addressed the audience and reflected on his mother’s life.
“What are the takeaways from such a life? First, mother’s answer would be to endure with character and integrity,” Douglas Sato said. “Students, you will encounter obstacles that will require your passion and faith in yourself to endure the setbacks and disappointments in life’s journey. Use what you learn at this academy to build up your strength and determination to improve a world that needs help.
“And remember, no advancement or breakthrough in technology is done alone,” he continued. “It will take courage to push boundaries, but that is the only way progress is made. It takes leadership and collaboration – all traits Eunice Sato utilized and will be developed here at your wonderful academy.”
Sato Academy of Math and Science is committed to keeping Eunice’s memory alive.
